XR Lab
Founded in 2017 and among the first of its kind worldwide, the XR Lab at The New School is a pioneering space dedicated to exploring Extended Reality (XR) technologies within creative fields and practice. Through Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR), we spark innovative projects in design, social research, and performing arts — driving research and shaping new narratives in virtual art. We cultivate a vibrant ecosystem where faculty, students, industry partners, startups, cultural institutions, and policymakers collaborate on XR prototypes, applications, and exhibitions. Our hands-on approach immerses participants in the world of XR and spatial computing, exploring its implications for creative expression.
Our partnerships create groundbreaking endeavors — from immersive art installations to XR-focused hackathons, creative jams, public events, curricula, and scholarly contributions. At the intersection of immersive storytelling, spatial computing, user-centric design, and ethical engagement, we strive to uncover fresh insights, envision future possibilities, and deliver transformative XR-infused experiences.
